Friend or foe

Anxiety can appear out of nowhere.

It can gradually develop from a small worry into fears, panics, etc. It can be very difficult to explain to people what is happening to you.

Some people try to cover up their anxieties and even hide them.  They will avoid any situation where they believe it might descend on them again.  Their world becomes smaller and smaller as they shut down on life.

But where did it all start from?

The beginning of everything is the Mind…. Your thoughts, your perceptions, your beliefs, your blueprint of life – all this information is going on inside you even if you are not totally aware of it.

It’s a bit like when we learn to drive a car. We start being aware of everything that we are doing, the pedals that we press, the levers that we move, the wheel that we turn.

But, once we have driven a few times it becomes more and more automatic in us to do these things. Until eventually we are driving along busy roads thinking about what we are going to do at the weekend or our to do lists etc. we can arrive places without remembering any of our journey.

In the same way your mind, once it has been programed a certain way, will start running by itself… creating reactions.  We need to take charge, to be more in charge of our thoughts and where they lead us.  We need to sort out that programing so that it doesn’t take charge of us.

Anxiety characteristics

We are all unique and the way that we deal with the anxieties that we have will be unique to us.


Some people become“fighters”  – they try to control everything around them, so that they can control the fear that is deep inside them.  They can manipulate the people or situations.

The trouble is that this just makes them “tight” inside, unyielding even, and they can be very difficult people to live or be in business with.  They have to know everything, they might find it hard to delegate to other people as that would take their control away from themselves.

It makes it hard for anyone close to them to be themselves and relax as they are always watching their backs in case they upset “the fighter”.

runnerWe have “The runner”  – the person who will avoid any situation or person that might upset them in anyway.  They can even manipulate situations so that they don’t have to be the person in the limelight.

They might be brilliant at their jobs but unable to perform in front of other people so they get others to speak up instead of them and this means that they are never really able to progress in their lives as they hold themselves back.

This can affect them in the workplace but also socially, they might really fancy a person but will never put themselves in a situation where they could talk to that person – allowing others to shine and therefore conquer!

Rabbit in the headlights“The Rabbit in headlights”   can’t talk, won’t talk.  Won’t take any risks as they don’t know what may happen – and anything out of the ordinary can freak them out.

They can be incredibly stubborn about making any moves that mean making decisions.  Because what if they made the wrong choice?  How on earth would they cope?  Better just to do nothing!

But what if Anxiety was there to help you?

I know it sounds a bit weird but I have found that when treating various people that the anxiety was there because they weren’t living the life they should be living – it was a “wake up call”.  These people were in jobs that they didn’t enjoy or suit them, or they were trying to please other people – forgetting themselves and what is fundamentally right for them.

For many though the anxiety is a build up of events/incidents, however minor, when they have experienced fear or similar emotions.  There is a lot of adrenalin that gets created inside at these times and when something similar happens or there is a trigger then the adrenalin kicks in and can be felt in various ways.

The physical symptoms of anxiety are:

  • Racing heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Dry mouth
  • Butterflies in stomach
  • Nausea
  • Urge to pass urine/empty bowels
  • Tremor
  • Sweating
  • Pins and needles

The psychological symptoms of anxiety are:

  • Inner tension
  • Agitation
  • Sleep issues
  • Fear of losing control
  • Dread that something catastrophic is going to happen (such as blackout, seizure, heart attack or death)
  • Irritability
  • Feelings of detachment

What set these people up to be like this?  They have no idea!  It’s all down to a virus in their software programming, just like a computer.  When you have a virus such as this you need a specialist to re-program your computer.
